A Borough Market institution serving classic British dishes

Standing majestically above London’s historic Borough Market, Roast uses seasonal ingredients to create classic British dishes of uncomplicated excellence. Since opening in 2005, the restaurant has become renowned for offering delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, popular with both locals and visitors alike.

Furthermore, Roast Bar relaunched in spring 2019, becoming an exciting destination for cocktails and bar snacks, whilst a new afternoon tea offering treats guests to exquisite sandwiches, scones and cakes throughout the week.

Roast prides itself on working with passionate and skilled producers, with menus that celebrate ingredients such as beef from Lake District Farmers and Goosnargh poultry from Reg Johnson in Lancashire. Closer to home, the restaurant also works with many of the stallholders in the market below, including Bread Ahead, Cannon & Cannon, and Grovers and Turnips.

From menus created by Head Chef Matt Bishop, guests can enjoy starters such as Orkney scallops with house-smoked saddleback and Yorkshire rhubarb or Chicken liver parfait with cherry compote, granola and sourdough. For mains, there are British classics or a selection of steaks from the grill, including the East Anglian Chateaubriand to share. True to the restaurant’s name, the Full and Proper Roast Beef is also available throughout the week, served with Yorkshire pudding, rosemary roasties and horseradish cream. Alongside Roast’s acclaimed menu sits a carefully-curated, concise wine list that focuses on small producers and indigenous European grape varieties.

On Sundays, Roast comes into its own, offering a three-course menu of British Sunday lunch favourites. Following starters such as Salmon gravlax with cucumber relish, guests can choose from Roast Chicken, Lamb Shoulder, Pork Belly or Sirloin of Beef, served with all the trimmings and lashings of gravy. Nostalgic English desserts complete the experience, such as Sticky date pudding with toffee sauce and Apple and quince crumble with custard.

Over the years, Roast has also established a reputation for being one of Borough’s top breakfast destinations. All tastes and occasions are catered for, with options ranging from Bircher muesli and Toasted cottage loaf, to Grilled Orkney kippers with lemon butter and the Full Borough with eggs, smoked bacon, sausage, fried bread, black pudding, grilled tomatoes, field mushrooms and bubble ‘n’ squeak.

In 2019, Roast also launched a delicious afternoon tea. The restaurant and bar form the ideal spot for hours spent catching up with friends and family over sandwiches, scones, cakes and fancies, alongside lashings of tea and Champagne. Served from Monday to Saturday, 12–6pm, Afternoon Tea at Roast is priced at just £25pp or £30pp with the addition of Champagne.

Furthermore, in May 2019 Roast Bar relaunched with a stylish new interior design that features carrara and verde marble tables, luxurious leather banquettes and festoon lighting that creates an infinity affect with reflections across the glass walls and ceiling. Bar Manager Aly Roshdy has created a list of tempting sips to be served in the new space, such as the Beekeeper with butter-washed Appleton 12-year-old rum, lemon, cardamom and honey. To accompany the drinks, Head Chef Matt Bishop has designed a concise menu of bar snacks inspired by classic British dishes with the likes of Lindisfarne Rock Oysters with Scrubby Oak apple vinegar and shallots and Pork, sage and onion Scotch egg with piccalilli.

A stunning venue for celebrations, a refuel refuge for weary shoppers or a meeting place for colleagues and friends alike; whatever the occasion Roast is the ideal spot to relax and enjoy deliciously British food overlooking an iconic London landmark.
