Co-founded by Prabir Chattopadhyay and Biswajit Deb Das, Little Kolkata represents everything the pair missed about Calcutta and its unique cuisine following their move to London. Finding themselves extremely homesick, especially for the comforting food Calcutta is known for, they began cooking for family and friends in their cosy flat in Kilburn. It was so popular that it was clear they could take the concept further, so they decided to start a supper club, which in no time became a sell-out event. This passion for Calcuttan tradition and flavour has now become very real with the launch of Little Kolkata.
The quaint restaurant offers a homely experience in the form of sharing plates, starting with dishes including Doi Papri Chaat, crisp wafers topped with spicy potatoes and garnished with yoghurt, tamarind chutney, sev and cucumber (£5). Larger main courses feature Golda Chingri Malai curr, jumbo prawns cooked in coconut cream (£13.50), whilst side dishes include Bengali Cholar Daal (£3.50). The cocktail menu is equally authentic as shown through the use of saffron in the Saffron Spritz (£9), which pays homage to the use of the ingredient in Indian cookery for centuries.
