Walk Japan Launches The Tohoku Hot Spring Snow Tour

The Off-The-Beaten-Track Specialist Introduces a Guided Snowshoeing Tohoku Route

London, September 2017…// Walk Japan, the pioneer of off-the-beaten-track tours of Japan, announces the launch of the Tohoku Hot Spring Snow Tour in February 2018. This tour perfectly showcases the region, famed for its beautiful rugged landscapes, copious amounts of powder snow, phantasmagoric juhyou snow monsters and relaxing onsen hot springs.

The Tohoku Hot Spring Snow Tour is a fully-guided, snow shoeing tour for small groups through the rural Tohoku region of Japan in the depths of winter. Characterised by towering mountains, remote valleys, vast forests and rugged coasts, Tohoku is especially beautiful when snow lays metres deep. Matsuo Basho, Japan’s greatest literary figure, wrote his most famed haiku poetry on an itinerant journey through the region in the 17th Century. We follow in his footsteps visiting some of the sites he eloquently depicts in his sparingly, elegantly verse including Yamadera, a spectacular temple set high on a precipice.

The locals, whose hospitality has especially been honed by the need for communal resilience in winter, warmly welcome us into their communities. Here we find onsen hot spring baths and take every opportunity to luxuriously soak in their refreshing and rejuvenating waters especially after our explorations over the snowy landscape each day. Our accommodation each night is in charming local inns that ply us with delectable evening meals using a wide range of fresh produce sourced straight from the seas, rivers, mountains and fields of Tohoku.

The Tohoku Hot Springs Snow Tour is a nine-day, eight-night fully-guided snowshoe tour for up to twelve participants, and the first tour will run from 24th – March 4th February 2018.

Prices for the nine-day tour start at JPY480,000 per person (approximately £3,394*) and includes: accommodation for eight nights; eight breakfasts, six lunches and eight evening meals; train transfers departing from Tokyo; snowshoe rental; baggage transfers and entrance fees. Not included are flights; transport to the tour meeting point at Tokyo Station and from tour finish point in Sakata; and drinks.

This Level 3 tour is suitable for reasonably fit people who can walk comfortably for 3 hours a day.
