FineArt @ Lympstone Manor

Hotel Artist in Residence Programme Launches With Kurt Jackson

Lympstone Manor, one of this year’s most highly anticipated hotel openings set to open in Devon on the 3rd April, has announced a partnership with “FineArt@” to create a year-long artist in residence programme featuring a series of high profile hand-picked artists. Michael Caines MBE has worked in partnership with Wendy and Wayne Adams, curators and owners of FineArt@ to personally select each participating artist based on his love of art and nature.

FineArt@ will see a rotating series of eight artists take up the mantle as artist in residence at Lympstone Manor throughout 2017, with a curated collection of art works on display within the hotel for guest’s appreciation. All featured works will be available to purchase, and each residency will kick off with a ticketed lunch and dinner event hosted by the artist, merging fine art with fine dining and enabling guests to learn more about each artist’s inspiration, techniques and body of work, in the beautiful setting of Lympstone Manor, over Michael Caines’ exquisite menu with paired wines.

Michael Caines commented, “We’re delighted to be launching the concept of FineArt@ Lympstone Manor, bringing this amazing collaboration of British artists to our stunning new venture. Wendy and Wayne share my passion for art and food, so we have the perfect opportunity with Lympstone Manor to showcase wonderful art in our public areas for all to enjoy. I’m particularly excited to kick things off with Kurt Jackson’s exhibition. Kurt is an amazing artist and we feel privileged and honoured to think that our landscape here has inspired his collection of work.”

The first artist in residence for FineArt@ is Kurt Jackson who presents the “Exe Estuary” exhibition. Kurt is from Dorset and graduated from St Peter’s College, Oxford with a degree in Zoology. While there, he spent most of his time painting and attending courses at Ruskin College of Art, Oxford. On gaining his degree he travelled extensively and independently, painting wherever he went. He travelled to the Arctic alone and hitched across Africa with his wife, Caroline. They moved to Cornwall in 1984 where they still live and work. A dedication to and celebration of the environment is intrinsic to his art and a holistic involvement with his subjects provides the springboard for his formal innovations. Jackson’s practice involves both plein air and studio work and embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, print making and sculpture.

He has been Artist in Residence on the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, at the Eden Project and at Glastonbury Festival since 1999. He has an Honorary Doctorate (DLitt) from Exeter University and is an Honorary Fellow of St Peter’s College, Oxford University as well as an academician at the Royal West of England Academy. He is an ambassador for Survival International and frequently works with Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WaterAid, Oxfam and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Over the past thirty years Jackson has had numerous art publications released to accompany his exhibitions. Three monographs on Jackson have been published by Lund Humphries depicting his career so far; A New Genre of Landscape Painting (2010), Sketchbooks (2012) and A Kurt Jackson Bestiary (2015). A Sansom & Company published book based on his touring exhibition Place was released in 2014. A collection of his poetry And was produced in 2011. Jackson regularly contributes to radio and television and presents environmentally informed art documentaries for the BBC. He was the subject for an award-winning BBC documentary, ‘A Picture of Britain’.

Works by Kurt Jackson inspired by the location of Lympstone Manor will be hung in the public areas of the hotel from 13th April – end of June 2017. Kurt is particularly fond of the River Exe, which has inspired a number of his works. He says, “The River Exe’s name is apparently derived from an early Celtic word for fish or a place abundant with fish. The idea that this river is bountiful and boasts a plethora of wildlife (since the fish are part of a web, a food chain) appeals to me, attracting me to the Exe to paint and draw. Over the last year or so, I have been exploring this watercourse, immersing myself in her charms, visiting and staying alongside her, in order to create a body of work about this beautiful part of Devon. The estuary has been a focal point for these paintings with its changing moods, huge tidal shifts and accompanying flocks of bird life. Copper waters, orange and pink shores, bright sunlight, dark reflected clouds, a skyline of jagged trees and a few passing boats, and always the soundtrack of the fluting, piping and whistling waders, ducks and geese.”

Kurt will be hosting an exclusive dinner event at Lympstone Manor on the 13th April 2017.

An evening with Kurt Jackson will include:

  • Arrival Apéritifs
  • A Five Course Menu by Michael Caines MBE
  • Matching Wines
  • Coffee and Petit fours
  • An Exclusive Talk by Kurt Jackson
